Dr. Tim Heitzman is a private Developmental Neuropsychologist and founder of Developing Brains in Fairfield, CT.
As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Heitzman’s practice and clinical research integrates the fields of developmental psychology and neuropsychology. He is known in both academic circles and the clinical community for his diagnostic skills, his work with the learning and behavior of children with developmental disorders, and the evaluation and management of concussions in children, adolescents and young adults.
Following his undergraduate work at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Dr. Heitzman earned a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University in Baltimore and a Doctorate from the University of Rhode Island, where he specialized in developmental neuropsychology. In addition to his doctoral work, he received formal training and clinical supervision in neuropsychology, rehabilitation and pediatric psychology at major medical institutions, including Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, NYC; and Boston Children’s Hospital-Harvard Medical School. Following his postdoctoral fellowship training he continued to work professionally at Boston Children’s Hospital, teaching pediatricians and psychology trainees, and providing outpatient neuropsychological services to families and schools before joining the faculty at Fairfield University.
As a professor of Psychology at Fairfield University, Dr. Heitzman taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Developmental Psychology, Human Neuropsychology and Tests and Measurements. Additionally, he now makes that content accessible to the broader level of parents and teachers through community-based workshops and school-based professional development. Topics include: Temperament, Executive Functioning, typical development of attention, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disorders and behavioral-based parenting strategies. Dr. Heitzman's expertise in these areas is highlighted throughout his research and practice.
As a practicing neuropsychologist, Dr. Heitzman implements cutting edge, research-based techniques for evaluation and interventions in his practice in Fairfield, CT. Parents and teachers walk away with a more intimate understanding of their children as well as the practical strategies for helping them at home and school. Integrating his expertise with his experience as an educator, Dr. Heitzman has also brought increased awareness of executive functions to private and public schools throughout Connecticut. While many experts may share knowledge of various topics, Dr. Heitzman is intimately interested in skill-based interventions, helping parents and teachers recognize levels of readiness in their children while tailoring a goodness of fit model between strategies and the student's strengths and weaknesses. In addition to his years of training and supervising executive functions coaches, recently Dr. Heitzman has offered school-based workshops that bring teachers and parents together, giving them "the same language" with interventions that connect home and school settings. As a neuropsychologist, he brings years of experience with some of the most complex neurological cases and an intimate understanding of research-based techniques. But as a father of five young children he is keenly aware of the everyday challenges and rewards of parenting and the need for practical and well-defined strategies.
